First Famine of the Century Compounded by Water Issues

Famine prompts author to donate proceeds to assist in water delivery.

SASKATOON, SK, CANADA, August 04, 2011 /Canada PR News/ -- The twenty-first century's first famine has hit the Horn of Africa with deadly strength. And while most people tend to think of food as the most relevant issue in times of famine, they forget that most of these areas were already facing dramatically reduced access to clean drinking water. Food scarcity, coupled with the drought and overall lack of access to clean water has created a deadly combination for countries like Somalia.

As a farmer and author of the children's novel, The Magical Horses, Beate Epp is acutely sensitive to the situation. As thousands of refugees flow across the border into Kenya, water scarcity is a very real threat. Refugee camps are expanding quickly resulting in a sharp increase in the demand for water.

"Now, more than ever, we all have to look at supporting organizations like charity: water. Places that were already facing challenges we can't are in even greater need," explains Epp, who is using the summer months to raise funds for a charity focused on providing water to the developing world. "I'm hoping my campaign will not only help to raise some funds to help provide people with this basic life necessity, but that it will also help raise awareness of the incredible devastation of this famine."

20% of every copy of The Magical Horses sold between now and mid-September will go to charity: water in order to help provide clean drinking water to communities in the developing world. Epp is also offering an original piece of artwork valued at $1900 to the person providing the highest donation to the campaign.

Books can be purchased through Amazon at: http://tinyurl.com/3mgk3c9

People are also encouraged to donate directly to the charity by visiting: http://mycharitywater.org/TheMagicalHorses

Charity: water is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing potable water to people in the developing world. Funds raised for the organization go directly towards the funding water projects in those countries most in need of assistance.
