Staying Home for the Holidays- Cautionary Travel Tale helps quell the winter travel bug!
Canadian Author offers cautionary tale for those contemplating exotic travel escapes.
CALGARY, AB, CANADA, November 27, 2010 /Canada PR News/ -- The winter season often brings with it dreams of visiting far-off places in an effort to get away from the chaos of the holidays and the harsh weather Canada has to offer. But before conditions outside lead you to make a hasty trip to your local travel agent or sign up for the increasingly popular option of teaching English overseas, Miles Burn's recent novel - The Chicken Cage: Chilung - offers a cautionary tale perfect for keeping you home for the holidays this season.
Burn's first novel is a composite of the experience of many foreigners he encountered living in Taiwan along with his own teaching English in Chilung - a city whose name literally translates to "chicken cage." Burn had looked to Taiwan to offer him an escape from his life in Canada, but found that life there was much more difficult than he had ever imagined. Moreover, he found that it was a sentiment shared by many others who embark on overseas ESL journeys. His fictionalized account reflects some of the ordeals he and others have faced.
"The reality of Canadian winters is enough to inspire anyone to want to escape to a far-off land. But some of the depictions of teaching English overseas can be pretty romanticized, and the hard truth is that visiting another country is a far cry from actually living there. You can quickly find yourself pining for the very things you once complained about in your homeland," says Burn. "The truth is, at a certain point I would have gladly traded the dreary rainy days of Chilung for a wintry Canadian day!"
It's the perfect gift for the travel fanatic on your shopping list, anyone planning to embark on a far-off voyage, or even the armchair traveller looking for adventure and drama from the comfort of their fireside this season. The Chicken Cage: Chilung will help quell that travel bug for a little bit longer, at least until after all the Christmas bills are paid off!
