On Mother's Day This Year, Give A Legacy, Not A Present.
Instead of spending money on candy and chocolate for your Mother, considering giving the gift of a Legacy- a collection of memories for generations to come
EDMONTON, AB, CANADA, May 06, 2010 /Canada PR News/ -- Edmonton, AB- How many of you will buy your mother something this year? For retailers it only comes second to Christmas as far as sales are concerned. No doubt Canadians have already headed to the store to buy something for their mom, and Canada Post will be inundated with express mail cards.
But as Financial Educator Jim Yih explains, there is a better way to express your love for your mom.
"I lost my mother way too young. Like a lot of people, I mourned her passing by collecting memories--photos, scrapbooks, calendars, souvenirs from trips, anything. But I realised there was a lot of gaps--people in the photos I didn't know, lots of details only she could have told me, says Yih.
What Jim suggests is that instead of another card or bunch of roses from the grocery store just before they close; what people really need are memories, things that can't be purchased.
"So this Mother's Day, I suggest we do two things at once. One, stop yourself from buying a card and another box of chocolate. And two, give your mother a legacy--a real gift, one that everyone will enjoy. Create a scrapbook together. Annotate your old photos. Talk about the old times, her ancestors. You'll learn a lot & it sure beats getting someone from Hallmark to rhyme for you."
Jim Yih is one of Canada's leading financial experts on wealth, retirement, and financial education in the workplace. He is also the creator of My Legacy, an organizer to help families collect and save their loved ones memories.
